ENTERING GRADE 5 (2011-12)
One required, and at least one from the 5th Grade Free Choice Book List
(2 books total).
ENTERING GRADE 6 (2011-12)
One required and at least one from the 6th Grade Free Choice Book List
(2 books plus writing requirement).
- Required: Joey Pigza Loses Control by Jack Gantos
- Student Choice - At least one from the 6th Grade Free Choice Book List
- Writing Requirement - A letter to your advisor (instructions included in the 6th Grade Free Choice Book List)
ENTERING GRADE 7 (2011-12)
One required and at least one from the 7th Grade Free Choice Book List
(2 books plus writing requirement)
- Required: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
- Student Choice - At least one from the 7th Grade Free Choice Book List
- Writing Requirement - A letter, consisting of at least four paragraphs, to your new teachers (instructions included in the 7th Grade Free Choice Book List).
ENTERING GRADE 8 (2011-12)
One required and at least one from the 8th Grade Free Choice Book List
(2 books plus writing requirement)
- Required: When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
- Student Choice - At least one from the 8th Grade Free Choice Book List
- Writing Requirement - A letter, consisting of at least four paragraphs, to your new teachers (instructions included in the 8th Grade Free Choice Book List).

High School summer reading will be used and assessed in English and Collegiate Skills or History classes. Please speak to your current English teacher with questions about summer reading. |
ENTERING GRADE 9 (2011-12)
- Required College Preparatory English - The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky and any one book from the College Preparatory English Summer Reading List (2 books total)
- Required Honors English - This Boy's Life by Tobias Wolff and any one book from the Honors English Summer Reading List (2 books total)
- Requirements for AP Human Geography Students:
- Read Chapter 1 from Barron's AP Test Prep (pp. 53-77).
- Complete the multiple choice section of the diagnostic test (pp. 19-34), and use the answer key to score this portion of the exam (pp. 37-47).
- In addition, students are encouraged to:
- Read the entire Barron's book (pp. 53-292).
- Create flashcards for vocabulary from chapters 1 and 2.
- See the class blog for online flashcards from these chapters.
- Watch or read the news on a daily basis, and see the blog for recommended news sources.
ENTERING GRADE 10 (2011-12)
- Required College Preparatory English - Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time by Mark Haddon and any one book from the High School Summer Reading Choice Book List (2 books total)
- Required Honors English - The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and any one book from the High School Summer Reading Choice Book List (2 books total)
- Requirements for AP Human Geography Students:
- Read Chapter 1 from Barron's AP Test Prep (pp. 53-77).

ENTERING GRADE 11 (2011-12)
- Required Reading (all rising Juniors)- The American Dream, Jim Cullen
You must read AT LEAST the Introduction of this book. It will be used throughout the year in American History and referenced in American Literature, so the more familiar you are with it, the more prepared you will be for the year.
- Required American Literature - Please read one book from the American Literature Summer Reading List (2 books total)
- Required AP Language and Composition
- The Gatekeepers by Jacques Steinberg
- AP Language and Composition students must also read one book from the AP Language and Composition Summer Reading List (3 books total).
- They must also email Mr. Underhill by Friday, August 19th at 8:00am to notify him of their completion of their reading and to receive an accompanying writing assignment, due on the first day of school. Instructions are included in the AP Language and Composition Summer Reading List.
